I can easily see this as a movie with Denzel Washington (Del Rawley), Brad Pitt (J.D. Cade), Bruce Willis (Dante DeVito) , and Julia Roberts (Jenny Crenshaw) in key roles with cameo appearances by Jason Alexander (Pickpocket), Morgan Freeman (Donnel Tommons) and Brad Pitt (Garvin Townes). A final edit would make this compelling suspense novel even more appealing to writers, but I predict readers of this genre will find it hard to put it down.

This is the tenth book I've read by Joseph Flynn, and it is the absolute best. Gripping and hard to put down. Excellent plotting and suspense that keeps you guessing till the very end. I have enjoyed his Jim McGill series about the President's husband, but this stand-alone book shows a depth and sophistication that the books in that series do not possess. Highly recommended!
"The Next President" was a great read. Excitement in every chapter and beautifully crafted characters to remember give this book a five-star rating for sure. If you enjoy Grisham, Follett, Cussler and others of this genre, make sure this one is a part of your library.
Enough other reviews here give you a quick description of the story, and so does the product page, so I'm not going to do that. Just make sure to get this book. It is what so many others aspire to be. This is the real deal. Get it. Now.
Loved this book. Great plot, great characters and a wonderful destination.
Joseph Flynn masterfully tells the story of a former marine sniper who is blackmailed into taking a shot at killing a black rising star, political candidate. Simultaneously weaving this story from different points of view, I found myself rooting for his success...no matter the outcome. His character, J.D. Cade is a man with skills, taught by the same government who is now (unknowingly) playing defense against him. Mix in really good characters and some interesting twists, like a decades old, family feud and you have a story that kept me interested and most importantly, didn't find me cheated at the end.
I really enjoy books written by Joseph Flynn. I've read most of his work now. There is a few four letter swear words but easy to get past as they are part of the drama. No graphic sex, questionable romance scenes. What the book gives you is a behind the scenes look at running for president. Remembering It is a novel a work of fiction. But written in such a way you feel like you could join in the conversation as you are right their in the moment. Some very special moments in the book, some true justice and some sadness. Every emotion is covered with a sincere writers hand. I highly recommend.
I enjoyed this book because the story seemed plausible. Every time I thought I had the answer to which direction the story was going I was wrong. The story has you asking the question of what would you do to save the life of someone you love and many other questions. Such a good read.
Many people reviewing this book have given the plot. What I would like to add is that is IS a thrilling book and fast paced. Realistic? Not especially so, I can't imagine all of the elements coming into play that perfectly, a blackmail of such depth and complexity. But it is a page turner and I couldn't put it down. How much do you love your child? Would you kill for him/her? If someone must die, who will it be? What lengths will you go through for love, for honor? And when pinned against a wall, do you cave in, do the deed, or fight back with all you've got? What made this an excellent book for me instead of just another political thriller was that many of the characters, even the minor ones were so well developed and so life-like...some make you think "whew what a CHARACTER!", others are more ordinary but stand out nonetheless. I often thought, "I know someone almost just like that" or "I really wish I knew someone like that". Most of these characters could be main characters in their own books, so well are they developed and liked by the reader. I'd like to see J.D. Cade appear in another book one day. Although it is improbably I'd like to see some of his other characters around again too. I'm sure they went about their lives which ended up being ordinary and unspectacular, but I found that then end came too soon and I still wanted more.
I've been hooked by Joseph Flynn's books since reading "The President's Henchman." The stories are riveting, filled with twists and surprises that can leave the reader on the edge of her seat. There are so many subplots that I'm forced to go back and refresh my memory about who is who and who is doing what. This is no hardship for me, since it serves to keep me involved in all the story lines. The only negative issues that I have, and those issues are with too many of books I read on my , are those that I blame solely on the editing, which I wish was done with the same attention to detail as the story.
